You can probably guess from our name, but at Silvina’s Nature we love all things natural. Whether it’s the ingredients we use for our delicious meringue Crown recipes or our attitude to life, we encourage all our lovely customers to embrace the wonders of nature wherever and whenever they can.
In this vain, we’ve created an exciting list of our favourite natural health and beauty remedies that you can easily make at home. Most of us know that we rely too much on overpriced beauty products or strong medication far too much – but what’s the solution? Sometimes the natural way is the best way!
Cheaper, cleaner and good for the soul, check out some quirky ways to mix up your health and beauty regime this summer.
Honey and lemon face scrub
Rubbing honey on your face might sound strange, but it’s actually a powerful anti-oxidant with many health properties that can be beneficial for those with dry or acne-prone skin, locking in moisture and keeping it hydrated.
Combined with lemon, which is rich in vitamin C and great for tightening pores and leaving a brighter complexion, this face scrub is a remarkably easy way to maintain your skin health. But don’t forget, the final ingredient is olive oil to form the base of your exfoliating scrub that will naturally moisturise your skin and embellish it with some much needed Vitamin E.
All you’ll need is 1/2 fresh lemon, 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of olive oil. After applying for 5-6 minutes, rinse off with cool water to reveal the new you!
Coconut oil for better hair
Coconut oil is one of the greatest ingredients out there and is incredibly effective when applied to dry hair. To perform a coconut oil hair mask, simply mix 2 parts raw coconut oil with 1 part olive oil to create an even mixture and apply it to dry areas of your hair and scalp. If you have a naturally oily scalp, then you can apply less to this area. When you’re done, comb your hair through to ensure it is applied evenly throughout.
While the olive oil is a powerful natural moisturizer, the coconut oil will imbue your dry strands with some much needed Vitamin E, Vitamin D and Iron. After you’ve let it sit for about 1o-15 minutes, simply rinse it out with cold water and you’ll be left with healthier, softer and more nourished hair.
Ginger and turmeric tea
Root vegetables are truly amazing. If you didn’t know this already then make sure you pay attention to this one. While green tea and other combinations of bagged leaves are great, you can seriously boost your evening hot drink routine with some chopped fresh ginger and turmeric.
As well as being a delicious and relaxing concoction, and an interesting change to your normal tea collection, this combination of raw ingredients can really boost your digestive health, immunity and brain function.
All you have to do is find some fresh Ginger and Turmeric from your local supermarket and chop it thinly before adding boiling water. You can allow it to simmer for as long as you want, depending on your taste, but we recommend sieving out the chunks of vegetable after 1-2 minutes if you’re a fan of subtle flavours.
Homemade lip balm
There are many homemade lip balm recipes out there, but our favourite at Silvina’s Nature is one of the simplest. All you need is beeswax, shea butter, coconut oil and 10 minutes of your time for a fun and creative DIY workshop.
The basic ratio is 3 parts beeswax pellets (you can order this very cheaply on Amazon!), 2 parts shea butter and 4 parts coconut oil. You vary this mixture according to you how soft you want the texture to be. Adding more beeswax will simply firm up the mixture and vice versa.
Once you’ve got everything together, just pop it in the microwave on medium heat for 30 seconds and give it a good stir. When it’s cooled down you’ll be left with your new favourite natural beauty product.
