We all know that sugar is the last thing you want in your diet if you’re trying to stay fit and healthy. But we were pretty surprised when we realised that it really does have a big impact on our mood as well.
You know that miserable feeling you sometimes get after binging a slice of cake? Well it turns out that that’s not just a mild feeling of guilt; a recent study has linked sugar from sweet food and beverages with depression and other mental health disorders.
How does sugar affect your mood?
The in depth study tracked the eating habits and lifestyles of 8,000 people over a staggering 22 years. By taking all this data into account, the researcher team managed to draw strong correlations about eating habits and health. There main conclusion was that those who consume 67 grams or more of sugar a day are 23 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who ate less.
What does this mean for you?
Even if your mental health is perfect, there’s a good chance that eating less sugar on a daily basis will lead to a happier, more fulfilled life. And we at Silvina’s Nature are pretty big on people being happy. But we’re also pretty big on indulgence – we know that banning yourself from eating the food you love is the last thing you want when you’re trying to cheer yourself up.
So for us, the way to get the best of both worlds is to use healthy, sustainable alternatives to sugar that maintain the great taste without all that negativity.
What is chicory root?
One of the magic ingredients that helps us do this is chicory root fibre. chicory root is a type of herbaceous plant that’s grown in Europe and the Americas. For many years, it’s actually been used as a caffeine-free coffee substitute. Nowadays, it’s used in great tasting healthy snacks like Silvina’s Nature Crown’s as a fantastically indulgent way of getting fibre into your diet, and sugar out of it. What more could you ask for?
Why do we use chicory root in our healthy snacks?
The great thing the fibre in chicory root is it’s insoluble – meaning your body doesn’t break it down or absorb it in the same way as it does sugar. That means if you eat chicory root with white sugar, or organic unrefined sugar, it should slow down the rate that your body processes that sugar. The upshot of all this? Less sugar in your body – and a healthier, happier you.
